Badgers earn two second-place finishes at Guelph Invitational

The Brock Badgers men's and women's varsity curling teams earned impressive second-place finishes this weekend on Saturday, Nov. 11 and Sunday, Nov. 12 at the Guelph Invitational hosted by the Guelph Curling Club. The Badgers women's junior varsity team also picked up significant wins at the invitational.

The men's varsity curling team, comprised of skip Owen Henry, vice Victor Pietrangelo, second Sean Kirkland and lead Patrick Sipura, rallied to secure a second place finish. The Badgers dropped their first game to the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks 6-4. In their second game, a rebound performance saw Brock defeat the Trent Excalibur 8-5. Despite a 5-3 loss to the Mohawk College Mountaineers in their final round robin game, the Badgers earned a birth to the playoffs after a good shootout score.

In a tightly contested quarter-final, the Badgers were triumphant over the Guelph Gryphons, winning 5-4.

Brock's semifinal matchup against the Laurier Golden Hawks started with the Badgers taking a significant lead in the first end. The final score was 9-2 for Brock, with the game finishing in six ends.

The Badgers faced a familiar opponent in the final, taking on Mohawk College. The Mountaineers defeated Brock 9-2.

Skip Julia Markle, vice Chloe Morby, second Ryenne O'Keefe and lead Alyssa Mayville of the women's varsity curling team combined for a strong outing at the Guelph Invitational. In their opening game, the Badgers took on the TMU Bold, with Brock pulling away for a 7-4 win. The Badgers recorded a massive win over the Mohawk College Mountaineers in round robin play, winning 14-3.

A 7-1 win over the York Lions in their final match of the round robin, earned the Badgers a first place finish in their pool and a spot in the playoffs.

In the semi-final match against the Guelph Gryphons, Brock won 7-6, booking their ticket to the final.

Despite a strong effort in the final, the Badgers were defeated 8-4 by the Waterloo Warriors.

The women's junior varsity curling team picked up wins against the Toronto Varsity Blues (8-5) and the Waterloo Warriors (7-4). A tie against the Trent Excalibur saw the Badgers face the Peterborough side again in the quarter-finals, where the Excalibur were winners, taking the game 7-4.

Up next, the Brock Badgers will take part in the Toronto Invitational, hosted by the Thornhill Club on Saturday, Dec. 2.
