AYLMER - Concluding their 2022-23 campaign at the OUA Championship hosted by Western University at the East Elgin Community Complex in Aylmer, the Brock Badgers figure skating team earned a trio of medal results to finish fifth overall at the provincial showcase this week.
Medaling in three events, along with strong results in several others, the Badgers were able to accumulate 33 total points lifting them into a Top 5 finish provincially. The championship was won by Western (111) who claimed their first OUA banner in figure skating since 2015. Joining the host on the podium were Guelph (82) and Toronto (75), followed by McMaster (41) who finished just eight points ahead of Brock for fourth.
Opening the medal results for the Badgers on Day 1 of the event,
Camille Dethomasis claimed bronze in the Gold Solo Dance, while
Alyssa Cross also brought home bronze in the Novice Short Program.
Adding to the medal total on Day 2, the duo of
Daniella Scurto and
Olivia Hussey picked up the Badgers top result at the championship, earning a silver in the Intermediate Similar Pairs.
"Going into the championship, one of our goals was to live in the moment and we truly did," mentioned team co-captain Scurto. "It was an emotional few days as several pillar skaters on our team competed for the last time as varsity athletes. Overall, we had a fantastic season with many victories along the way."
Graduating seniors from the Badgers this season include Scurto, fellow team captain
Shanelle Hanson, and
Claire Sanderson,
Hayley Keith,
Mackenzie Ranta, and
Thomas Turner.
On the ice, further Top 5 results for Brock included; fifth place finish by Hussey in the Star 10 Freeskate; fourth for Keith and Dethomasis in the Open Rhythm Dance Pair; fifth in the Freeskate Four for Cross,
Peyton Bishop,
Kaia Fogh, and
Madelyn Wilk; fifth in the Open Men's Freeskate for Turner; and fifth for the team in the Open Synchro.
"We would like to thank our coaches -
Emily Albrecht,
Carly Albrecht, and
Bralyn Nelson," mentioned the captain trio of Scurto, Hanson, and Dethomasis. "We cannot thank them enough for what they do for our team. Without their commitment, dedication and positive encouragement, we would not be nearly as strong or successful as we are as a program."
