The Brock Badgers figure team earned two major awards and three individual medals as they hosted nine other Ontario University Athletics (OUA) schools for a thrilling two days of competition.
Starting on Tuesday, March 5 and ending on Wednesday, March 6, the OUA Figure Skating Championship was hosted at Canada Games Park in Thorold.
"It was a blast to host. Our skaters had to volunteer and skate during the two-day event and they did a fantastic job doing so," said head coach Emily McCarthy. "It was not a typical OUA championship where we just cheering on our team the whole time, so for them to be able to do both was just amazing to see."
Besting her finish from a year ago, Alyssa Cross earned a silver medal in the women's novice short program.
Cross then partnered with Camile DeThomasis, Hayley Keith and Kaia Fogh to finish with a bronze medal in the dance fours event.
The Badgers weren't finished there, adding a bronze medal in the intermediate couples pairs courtesy of Trinity Males and Olivia Hussey.
"We're super proud of them (Trinity and Olivia)," said McCarthy. "They worked super hard all season on their unison to get close together, and they had a few bobbles, but they were still able to come out with a very good result.
At the end of the award ceremony, two major awards were handed out. McCarthy won Coach of the Year, and the Badgers also took home the Team Spirit Award.
Meanwhile, a strong second day of competition propelled the Western Mustangs to their 17th Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Figure Skating Championship.
It was a close battle for first as the Mustangs (89) won by a mere three points over the second-place Toronto Varsity Blues (86).
On Day 1, the Mustangs trailed the Blues by eight points and put together an impressive second day of competition, earning 44 points on Wednesday to take the banner.
Western led all schools with five gold medals with Toronto trailing close behind with three. The Varsity Blues finished with a competition-high 11 total medals.
The Guelph Gryphons held on to their third-place spot from the first day to earn the bronze medal with 76 points.
