Brock finishes regular season on winning note against Ottawa and Western

The Brock Badgers women's tennis team ended their weekend series with victories over the Ottawa Gee-Gees and Western Mustangs.

On Saturday, Sept. 28, the Badgers hosted the Gee-Gees at the Youngs Sportsplex in Welland battling their way to a 4-3 win.

The Badgers then travelled to London to take on the Mustangs at the Western Tennis Centre on Sunday, Sept. 29 winning their second of the season 4-3.

Brock 4 - Ottawa 3

Brock won two of the three doubles matches thanks to Emma Shea and Cynthia Szebeni, who claimed victory with a score of 8-3.

Szebeni was stellar as she won the game-deciding match in straight sets by scores of 6-2 and 6-3 to help the Badgers earn their first win of the season.

Fiona Barkovic and Aleks Paramentic also excelled in doubles for an 8-4 win, giving the Badgers another point.

In the singles matches, the Badgers fought hard and were victorious in three of six matchups.

Barkovic cruised through her match, winning 6-1 and 6-2 to add on to Brock's lead.

Defeating her opponent in straight sets both by the score of 6-2, Paramentic impressed.

Brock 4 - Western 3

Barkovic capped off the strong weekend by winning the first set of her singles match 7-5 and the third-set tie breaker 10-8 in the deciding match to secure the Badgers' team victory.

The Badgers played incredible in the singles matches, winning four out of six.

With a commanding two-set victory by scores of 7-5 and 6-0, Paramentic continued her impressive showing along with fellow teammate Szebeni who won in straights sets 7-5 and 6-4.

In a tightly contested match, Gabby Cayen triumphed, taking the first set 7-6 (7-3) and the third-set tie breaker 10-4.

Against the Mustangs, Brock dropped a pair of games in the doubles matches to surrender a point.

First-year Badgers Shea and Szebeni got their lone doubles win by a score of 8-7 after a 7-3 tiebreaker.

Next, the Badgers look to keep it rolling as they compete in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Championships from Friday, Oct. 11 to Sunday, Oct. 13, at the Mayfair Tennis Club.
