The Brock Badgers women's team gained valuable experience this past weekend.
Overall, the Badgers finished 1-2 and in sixth place overall at the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Championships that took place at the Mayfair Toronto East in Toronto from Friday, Oct. 12 to Sunday, Oct. 13.
"We are all proud of the way the women's team competed at the provincial championships," said head coach Todd Green. "We have a lot of returning players who have had successful seasons and it's exciting to look forward to next season. The win over Ottawa was hard fought."
OUA Quarterfinal: Brock 1 - McMaster 5
To start the tournament, the Badgers dropped a 5-1 decision to the No. 3 seeded McMaster Marauders.
After dropping the first set, Cynthia Szebeni rebounded to win her next two sets (4-6, 7-5, 10-4) to claim the lone Brock victory in singles competition.
Anika Radulescu and Lauren Stevens won their doubles contest, but the Badgers were bested in the two others.
"A special thank you goes out to Laura who contributed a win at the OUA Championships and finished up her career at Brock strong." Green said.
OUA Consolation Semifinal: Brock 3 - Ottawa 2
Coming off a quarterfinal loss, the Badgers looked to reverse course and get their first win of the tournament.
Szebeni continued her winning ways, taking home her singles match 8-6.
The Badgers then saw wins from Fiona Barkovic (8-6) and Aleks Paramentic who won 8-7 off a thrilling 7-3 tiebreaker.
OUA Fifth-Place Match: Brock 0 - York 5
The Badgers settled for sixth place after falling in five consecutive singles matches to the York Lions.
This marks the end of the season for the women's tennis team who finished with an overall record of 3-6.
