Badgers gain valuable experience at OUA Championship

A young Brock Badgers women's curling team showed the future is bright with their recent 2-2 performance at the OUA (Ontario University Athletics) Championship.

"With most of the team returning, we will be able to build on this experience and have a strong next season," said head coach John Sawchuk.

The three-day provincial championship was hosted by the Guelph Gryphons and took place on Friday, Feb. 2 to Sunday, Feb. 4 at the Guelph Curling Club.

To start the first day of competition, the Badgers consisting of skip Julia Markle, vice Chloe Morby, second Ryenne O'Keefe, lead Jenna Decelercq-Towers and alternate Alyssa Mayville took on the Waterloo Warriors. After scoring three points in the first end, Waterloo took control of the match. A three-point sixth end made the score 7-2, and the game was conceded after six ends.

In their second match of the day, the Badgers dropped a 10-2 decision to the TMU Bold in six ends. A six-point fourth end was too much for Brock to overcome as they dropped to 0-2 after the first day of competition.

Day 2 brought strong results for the Badgers, who came out firing. The team earned their first victory of the bonspiel with a commanding 10-2 win over the Windsor Lancers. Brock gave up the first two points in the first end but controlled the game from there, scoring multiple points in the third, fourth and fifth ends en route to the victory.

The last round-robin match proved to be the most exciting, as the Badgers earned a hard-fought 9-7 win.  After going down 7-3 after six ends, the Ravens fought back, putting up four to tie the match. Markle and the Badgers responded with a clutch two-point eight end to win the match in thrilling fashion.

Brock's road ended after Day 2 due to the tiebreaker decided by draw score; ranking them 10th after round-robin play.

Markle was named a Second Team All-Star at the conclusion of the event for her strong performance as the Brock skip.
