Heyes, Friesen named Brock University Athletes of the Week

Anthony Heyes (St. Catharines, Ont.) of the men's basketball team and Mia Friesen (St. Catharines, Ont.) of the women's wrestling team have been named the Brock University Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, Nov. 9.

Heading into a two-game road trip in Toronto, Heyes and the Badgers looked to add to their two-game win streak, beginning with the Varsity Blues on Friday night. The third-year guard was efficient for Brock, scoring 13 points in 24 minutes of action. Even more impressively, Heyes went 5-for-8 from the field and shot 50 per cent from beyond the arc, nailing three of his six three-point attempts en route to a 81-71 victory. Up next was a Sunday night clash with the No. 3 nationally ranked TMU Bold. The hot hand from Friday's game delivered once again for the Badgers; this time scoring a game-high 24 points in the 82-76 win. Heyes could not be stopped as he poured in six three-pointers on 12 attempts, shooting at a 50 per cent clip for the second straight game. The Kinesiology major was calm under pressure, knocking down all four of his free throws in the victory as the Badgers ride a four-game win streak into next weekend.

Friesen showcased a dominant weekend at the Adrian women's duals on Saturday, Nov. 8 and the Adrian Invite on Sunday, Nov. 9 in Adrian, Mich. At Saturday's event, the fourth-year wrestler went undefeated in all four of her matches, earning each decision by 10-0 technical fall. On Sunday, the Labour Studies major picked up right where she left off, starting her day with a 10-0 victory via technical fall in just 16 seconds. In the 131-pound A-bracket quarterfinal, Friesen picked up her sixth victory of the weekend, defeating Campbellsville's Olivia Messerly by fall at 1:43. In the semifinal, Friesen picked up another 10-0 technical fall victory, sending her to the 131lb A-bracket final. She saved her best last, taking down McKendree's Alexandra Szkotnicki in 0:28 for her seventh 10-0 technical fall result of the weekend. Over the two days, Friesen delivered a commanding performance, outscoring her opponents 79-2.
