It was a weekend of gaining experience for the young Brock women's track and field team.
Sarah Saldutto led the Badgers' results as they placed 11th at the 2025 Ontario University Athletics Championships that took place from Friday, Feb. 21 to Saturday, Feb. 22 at the Dennis Fairall Fieldhouse in Windsor.
Besting the competition for the second year in a row was the Western Mustangs who had 194.0 points. The Guelph Gryphons finished second (141.5) while the hosting Windsor Lancers sent the home fans happy with a bronze medal result (117.0).
"Our women's team is of mostly newer student-athletes with a few experienced veteran leaders," said head coach Jonathan Younker. "The women's team accounted for 10 of the 16 personal-best performances by the combined squad, and both Sofia Aljourmi and Hailee Masse achieved multiple personal bests at the biggest meet of the season. All of these top personal- best performances are investments that will pay major dividends in the future as this group gains experience."
After coming third in the 60-metre hurdles preliminary race with a time of eight seconds and 59 milliseconds, Saldutto bested that result in the final by finishing in eight seconds and 49 milliseconds to claim second, setting a personal best.
Saldutto's silver medal gets added to the trophy case from last season in which she earned a silver in the long jump event.
The local Welland native also finished ninth in the long jump event in 2025 with a successful attempt of 5.55-metres.
Fighting through a tough field of 30 competitors, Maya Prescott-Clyne qualified for the semifinals in the 60m race with a time of 7.80. Her subsequent time of 7.81 was not enough to move her on to the final.
Sajini Ganeshamurthi competed in the women's pentathalon and had her best result come in the shot put event. Her throw of 9.94m placed her fifth out of the 11-person field.
In the 1000m race, Adeline Steiger took home a top 10 result with a time of 2:57.88 which was just a mere one millisecond from the eighth and ninth-place finishers.
In the field, Megan Jaques earned the best result for the Badgers with a seventh-place finish in the shot put event. Her throw of 11.91m was just one centimetre away from the sixth-place finishing Jacqueline Turner.
The top result for Brock on the relay side was an eight-place result in the 4x200m event. The team of Prescott-Clyne, Sofia Aljourmi, Keira Arnold and Olivia Mark crossed the line in a time of 1:46.85.
Athletes who have qualified will compete at the 2025 U SPORTS Track & Field Championships right back at the Dennis Fairall Fieldhouse in Windsor from Thursday, March 6 to Saturday, March 8.
