DIljee, Pockar named Brock University Athletes of the Week

Avery Diljee (Fergus, Ont.) of the women's hockey team and Birch Pockar (Calgary, Alta.) of the men's basketball team have been named Brock University Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, Feb. 15.

The Brock Badgers women's hockey team entered the weekend four points ahead of the Western Mustangs for the final playoff spot in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) West Division. Facing the No. 4 nationally ranked Guelph Gryphons, Diljee delivered in the clutch, scoring the lone goal in a tight 1-0 victory on Thursday, Feb. 12 at Canada Games Park to secure Brock's first postseason berth since the 2022-23 season. The second-year Kinesiology major took the puck away from a Gryphons' defender and tucked it past Guelph's Alysse Wilkinson for the eventual game-winner in the second period. In their final contest of the regular season, the Badgers bested the Carleton Ravens 3-2 in overtime on Saturday, Feb. 14 at Canada Games Park. Diljee's goal in the first period got the scoring started for the Badgers and was her fifth of the season, tying her for second on the team. After the Ravens evened the score at 2-2, Diljee led the breakout early in the overtime period that eventually led to the game-winning goal from Allison Moore.

Pockar earned his second Athlete of the Week selection after a sensational weekend that saw him lead the Badgers to two clutch victories that helped solidify the fourth seed in the OUA heading into the playoffs. In a thrilling 93-91 victory over the Laurier Golden Hawks on Friday, Feb. 13 in Waterloo, Ont., Pockar finished one-point shy of 20 points, shooting 50 per cent from the field as he finished 7-for-14. In the pivotal fourth quarter, he played all but one minute, scoring two baskets and picking up two steals to make an impact on both ends of the floor. The first-year Business student led all Badgers with a career-high 22 points and a team-high eight rebounds in a 77-76 road win over the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday, Feb. 14. He delivered a similar shooting performance from the field, finishing 7-for-15 for 47 per cent. His fourth-quarter showing was once again pivotal for the Badgers' success as he poured in 11 points on a perfect 4-for-4 shooting performance, including 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. This marked his third straight game with double-digit points and his sixth in the past seven games.
