ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Brock University women's fastpitch team opened the 2013 OIWFA regular season with a 1-3 record. The Badgers dropped both ends of a doubleheader against Queen's losing by scores of 2-1 and 5-4 and split with York winning Game One 5-4 and losing Game Two 5-4.
In Game One versus Queen's, the young Badgers team had a hard time getting the bats going. Brock made a late charge in the bottom of the 7th scoring one but came up short in the end.
The Badgers offense was led by
Alanah Doyle who went 2-for-4 with an RBI double and
Brianne Jacobs who was 1-for-3.

Megan Nickel pitched a complete game giving up two runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts.
In Game Two, the Badgers started strong taking the early lead 2-0 into the 3rd. Queen's answered with three in the bottom half of the inning to take a 3-2 lead. The game would need extra innings to decide. With a runner on 3rd, Brock was unable to cash the go ahead run in the top of the 8th. Queen's scored in the bottom of the inning to win 5-4.
Miranda Wiens and Kelsey Hanly shared the pitching duties for Brock. Wiens gave up three runs on four hits striking out one. Hanly gave up two runs on three hits striking out one.
Offensively,
Brianne Jacobs led the way for Brock going 2-for-4.
On Sunday, Brock hosted York for their second doubleheader. The Badgers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 2nd. York answered in the top of the 3rd taking the lead 3-2. York would add another run in the top of the 5th leading 4-2.
Facing adversity for their second straight game, this young Badgers team would not give up, scoring two runs in the bottom of the 5th to tie the game 4-4.
This game would also need extra innings. After a scoreless 8th, York would strand two runners in the top of the 9th thanks to some great defense from the Badgers. In the bottom of the 9th, Brock would not be denied. With the bases loaded and one out,
Codi McMaster pinched hit a loop single over the second basemen's head to score the winning run from third.
Megan Nickel took the win giving up four runs on five hits striking out five. Kelsey Hanly got the save pitching two strong innings striking out two.
The Badgers offence was led by
Alanah Doyle (3-for-4) and Des Cipollone (2-for-4).
In Game Two, the Badgers trailed York 3-0, before answering with three runs in the top of the 5th tying the game 3-3. York would answer right back with two runs in the bottom of five to take a 5-3 lead.
With York leading in the top of the 7th 5-3, the Badgers could only get one run across dropping their third one-run game of the weekend.
Miranda Wiens pitched five strong innings giving up five runs on seven hits while striking out two and walking two.
Megan Nickel pitched in relief striking out one.
Shannon McGinnis (2-for-4) and
Colleen Albin (3-for-4) led the Badgers offense.
The Badgers travel to Windsor Saturday morning and finish the weekend against the OIWFA champion Western Mustangs on Sunday.Â
