The Brock Badgers women's softball team put up a battle but ultimately came up short in both contests.
On Saturday, Sept. 21, the Laurier Golden Hawks bested the visiting Badgers by scores of 5-3 and 8-6 at Waterloo Park in Waterloo.Â
Game 1: Brock 3 - Laurier 5Â
The Badgers had three more hits than the Golden Hawks but were unable to turn that into runs, falling by two in the first contest.Â
Tanis Drover hit leadoff for Brock and sparked the offence with three hits and two runs batted in (RBI). Â
Drover was a catalyst for the three-run second inning for the Badgers which started off the scoring in the game.Â
The Golden Hawks turned the tide, scoring two in the third and three in the fifth to take the lead which they would not relinquish.Â
In the seventh inning, the Badgers had two runners on with two out, but a ground out sealed their fate,Â
Mya Booker earned the other RBI in Game 1 and including Booker and Drover, there were a total of seven Badgers who delivered hits.Â
Getting the start, Raegan Lalande pitched four innings, giving up five hits and five runs (three earned). Lalande did not have a strikeout and walked one batter.Â
Emma Poulton threw two innings in relief, surrendering just one hit. Â
Brock struggled defensively, giving up four errors compared to one from the Golden Hawks.Â
Game 2: Brock 6 - Laurier 8Â
The Badgers looked to get revenge in the second game by starting out strong with runs in each of the first four innings.Â
Drover continued her strong hitting day, hitting a two-RBI double to centre field to end her day with four RBI. Â
The Golden Hawks kept fighting, lowering the lead to Badgers' lead to 4-3 in the top of the fourth.Â
In a momentous three-run sixth, Laurier took the lead for good at 7-6 and did not look back, scoring another run in the seventh.Â
The Badgers had two singles in the final frame courtesy of Lalande and Emma Young but a double play off a Ryan Schepers ground ball sealed the victory for the Golden Hawks.Â
Poulton and Lalande spilt time in the circle with Poulton going 3.1 innings and Lalande delivering 3.2. The duo combined for eight runs with four being earned and 11 hits. Â
Lalande held a team-high three strikeouts in Game 2. Â
In the field, Brock gave up five errors, and Laurier surrendered three.Â
Emma Andres, Brielle Greenslade and Alexis Simpson all earned one RBI for the Badgers.Â
Up next, the Brock women's softball team stay in Waterloo for a doubleheader clash with the Waterloo Warriors on Sunday, Sept. 22. Game times are set for 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.Â
