It was a good start to the weekend for the Brock Badgers women's softball team.
On Saturday, Sept. 28, the Badgers swept the visiting McMaster Marauders with scores of 4-3 and 11-4 at Lancaster Park.
Game 1: Brock 4 - McMaster 3
The Badgers held off a furious Marauders' comeback, taking the first game 4-3.
Tanis Drover and Brielle Greenslade led the way for the Badgers with two hits each.
Greenslade's first of two runs batted in (RBI) helped give the Bagers an early 1-0 lead in the first inning.
The second-year catcher/second base was at it again in the fourth inning, driving in another run with a single. Emma Andres tripled that frame as well, giving the Badgers an early 3-0 advantage.
After the teams traded runs, the Marauders scored two in the top of the seventh. A ground out sealed the hopes of a comeback from the visitors.
Ace pitcher Reagan Lalande was sharp on the mound, throwing a complete game for the win. Lalande gave up six hits and three earned runs while striking out two batters and walking three others.
Jade Fagner and Emma Young were the other Badgers who notched hits.
Brock outhit McMaster 7-6 on the day but also gave up more errors, surrendering three compared to just one from their opposition.
Game 2: Brock 11 - McMaster 4 (five innings)
The Badgers made it two in a row against the Marauders with an emphatic 11-4 win in five innings.
It was a quick start for the Badgers as they scored an impressive six runs in the first inning and five in the second.
The balanced offensive output came from eight different hitters, with Alexis Simpson leading all Brock hitters with two hits and three RBI.
Mackenna Nagy brought in two runners while Greenslade, Aleksandra Ruksenas and Isabella Smolcic each had one RBI.
In the circle was Emma Poulton, who went five innings, giving up five hits but only one earned run (four runs total). Poulton added five strikeouts to just two walks.
McMaster had five hits but was unable to tally a run on the board. Brock scored 11 runs off nine hits and two errors from the visitors.
The Badgers gave up three errors in the field.
Up next, the Badgers will travel to Hamilton for a rematch with this same Marauders squad on Sunday, Sept. 29. Game times are set for 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
