The Brock Badgers women's softball team split its two-game series with the Waterloo Warriors.
Brock secured the victory with a strong 5-2 win, but later suffered defeat in the second game with a tough 9-0 loss on Sunday, Sept. 23 at Budd Park in Waterloo.
Game 1: Brock 5 - Waterloo 2
Offensively, both the Badgers and the Warriors started off slow, not generating much offence until the fourth and fifth inning when the Badgers took a 4-0 lead.
During those two innings, Reagan Lalande, Ava Ranney, Isabella Smolcic and Allegra Ferreira each had a single base hit while Emma Andres had two singles to help the Badgers jump in front.
Waterloo would drive in two runs of their in the bottom of the sixth, but it was not enough as the Brock held on to win.
The Badgers' dominant offense was led by their outfielders, Ferreira, Andres and Ranney, who each had two hits and a run batted in (RBI). Three others earned one hit each including Lalande, Brock's starting pitcher, who had an RBI of her own.
Lalande pitched a complete game as she had five strikeouts, walking none and allowing just two runs on six hits to help the Badgers finish victorious.
Flawless defence was shown as Brock committed no miscues to Waterloo's one.
Brock earned two walks while also leading the hitting department nine to six.
Game 2: Brock 0 - Waterloo 9 (five innings)
In the second contest, the Badgers were shutdown offensively, while the Warriors consistently found the barrel for base knocks.
Tanis Drover and Andres were the only two Badgers to record a hit while Alexis Simpson, Mackenna Nagy and Jade Fagner each earned a walk in the game.
First-year pitcher Madison Parrish got the start in the circle, going three and two-third innings, surrendering four hits and five runs (zero earned) while walking five and striking out one.
Emma Poulton came in relief, going 1.1 innings, where she gave up four runs (zero earned) and two hits while also walking none and striking out one.
Waterloo's offence was led Jordan Ripley and Raegan Cressman as they each had a base hit and two RBIs as the team scored two runs or more in three different innings.
The game concluded with Waterloo recording six hits compared to only two for Brock.
Warriors starting pitcher Rileigh Helps held Brock to two hits in the game, striking out and walking three batters. Helps allowed no runs to earn the win.
Poor fielding hurt the Badgers as they finished the game with six errors to the Warriors' two.
Next, the Badgers return home to Lancaster Park from a long road trip to have a Saturday showdown in a two-game series versus the McMaster Marauders on Sept. 28. Game 1 will begin at 2 p.m. and Game 2 is scheduled for 4 p.m.
