ST. CATHARINES, Ont – This afternoon, the Brock
men's soccer team (2-8-1 OUA) played their first game on the Alumni field versus the Guelph Gryphons. The game would end in a scoreless tie as they close in on the final playoff spot.In the opening 10 minutes, Guelph carried all the momentum, but it was Brock starter
Matthew Zaikos (Markham, Ont.) stopping three straight shots, including winning a one-on-one with a beautiful dive to keep it deadlocked at 0-0.
Eric Bradey (Guelph, Ont.) collided with Zaikos on the play, both going down and appeared to be in a fair amount of pain.
As the half carried on, the Badgers picked up the pace but could not get anything going offensively. Both teams were tied 0-0 after 45 minutes.
In the second, the game was competitive but disciplined as both teams would see time in each others end with a number of scoring opportunities.
In the 89th minute, Guelph would have the chance to win it with a
free kick just outside Brock's 18 yard box, but Zaikos came up with the easy save.
In goal Zaikos turned aside all 12 shots he faced for the shutout. Guelph starter Bradon Taylor added two saves in the tie.
The Badgers return to action October 10th on the road versus the Windsor Lancers before travelling north October 17th & 18th against the Algoma Thunderbirds.
