
ST. CATHARINES, ON - The Brock University women's softball team opened the 2016 OIWFA regular season with a 4-2 record. The Badgers swept the doubleheader against the Laurier Golden Hawks and split with both the Toronto Varsity Blues and Waterloo Warriors.
Friday night at Lancaster Park, the Badgers dropped the opener to the Toronto Varsity Blues by the score of 4-1 and answered back in Game Two with a 5-3 victory.
In Game One, Kelsey Hanly suffered the loss allowing four runs on six hits while striking out one. In relief, Lena MacDonald threw four shutout innings giving up just one hit while fanning three.
Madi Clinton (1-for-2),
Shannon McGinnis (1-for-3, RBI) and Paige Sharp (1- for-2) all added one hit each in the loss.
In Game Two, Brock
Shayla Martin got the start allowing three runs on five hits over three innings of work. In relief, Larissa Rowdon picked up the victory throwing four scoreless innings while allowing three and striking out two.
Leading the way for the Badgers offensively were Sharp (2-for-4, RBI), Laine Padovan (2-for-4, RBI) and Lexi Hext (2-for-3).
On Saturday against the Laurier Golden Hawks, the Badgers swept the season series winning by scores of 5-4 and 2-1.
In Game One, Hanly picked up the victory after going the distane. Over seven innings of work, Hanly allowed four runs on 13 hits while fanning three.
Offnsively, Martin led the way going 2-for-4, highlighted by the game winning RBI in the bottom of the seventh. Padovan continued to stay hot at the plate going 3-for-4 with two RBI. Rounding out the Badgers bats were Clinton (3-for-4. RBI) and Doyle (3-for-4, RBI).
In Game Two versus Laurier, Rowdon picked up her second victory of the season after going the distance. Over seven solid innings, she allowed just one run on four hits while striking out two.
In the Badgers 8-5 loss to Waterloo Sunday morning, MacDonald threw five innings allowing six runs on eight hits while allowing two walks and striking out one. In relief Hanly closed out the game allowing two runs on three hits over two innings of work.
Leading the Brock offense in Game One were Doyle (2-for-4, RBI), McGinnis (2-for-4, 2 RBI) and
Rachel Jarvis (2-for-3, RBI).
In the Badgers final game of the weekend they defeated Waterloo by the score of 6-3.
Martin went the distance for the victory allowing three runs on eight hits while striking out three.
Clinton led the way going 3-for-4 with an RBI while Sharp and MacDonald both went 1-for-4 with two RBI each.
