Brock men's soccer knocks off No. 10 ranked Mustangs

6072

The Brock University men's soccer team knocked off the No. 10 ranked Western Mustangs Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.

The Badgers came out quickly setting the pace early. They methodically moved the ball up the field using small passes to maintain possession and slowly backing the Mustangs up. However, on a strong counter attack by the Mustangs, Braeden Gee scored on a hard right-footed strike from just outside of the box.

The big match up throughout the game came between Brock's Liam Wilson and Western goalkeeper, Kody Thomson.

Their first meeting followed an Anthony Smith shot on goal that hit a Western defender's hand and set up an early opportunity to tie the match. Wilson stepped up to the penalty mark and sent a strike to Thomson's right, which was stopped. However Thomson was called for early movement and given a yellow card for his troubles. Wilson again stepped up and doubled down on the lower right side of the net. Thomson once again, diving to his right stopped the penalty kick but the rebound jumped up which Wilson calmly headed into the back of the net to even the game 1-1.

These two players would meet again in the second half.

Smith was excellent for the Badgers bringing energy and many strong runs for the home side. In a run late in the first half Smith took on two defenders just outside the Western box before a skilled touch 'nutmegged' a third Western defender. His countless entrance passes put the Badgers in good position to take the lead.

In the final meeting between Wilson and Thomson, the Badger's striker was attacking as the Western keeper made a hard challenge and was given his second yellow of the match which resulted in him being ejected and showing his frustration. This time Alex Mukubya hit the penalty shot past the Western backup for the 2-1 lead.

Wilson's terrific day was capitalized late in the second half. The Badgers faced immense pressure from the Mustangs who were looking to at least preserve their undefeated record. After many entrance passes into the box, goalkeeper Matthew Haggith made a stop and alertly found Wilson with a throw and was in on a break away. He sent a pass into Jordan Smalling who put the game away and sealed a huge home victory.
