Brock splits final games with Western in preview of OIWFA qualifier

The Brock softball team solidified second place in the Ontario Intercollegiate Women's Fastpitch Association (OIWFA) standings with a victory over the Western Mustangs during at Lancaster Park on Sunday, Oct. 17.
 
The Badgers (8-4) will now compete in the West Regional Qualifier versus first-place Western (11-3) on Saturday, Oct. 23 at Drumbo Park just outside of Brantford. First pitch is 11 a.m.
 
The winner will advance to the OIWFA Championships at the Brampton Fairgrounds on Sunday, Oct. 24. The losing team must qualify by defeating the winner of the other Regional semifinal.

"We're getting great pitching and quality innings from our pitching staff, and we seem to be getting those much-needed timely hits," said head coach Mark Hall. "Being a younger team, it took a bit for the girls to gel together,  but they seem to have really embraced each other as teammates. We're very proud of this group of student-athletes and are looking forward to see what they can do this weekend."
 
On Oct. 17 at Lancaster Park, the Badgers defeated the Mustangs 4-3 on Paige Sharp's walk-off to seal the deal as Brock celebrated their Senior players in style.

The Badgers celebrated senior players Sharp, Katie-Ann Oberle, Chanelle Church, Grace Blamauer and Ashley Westfall following the game.
 
With the game tied at three in the bottom of the seventh inning, Sharp doubled on a 1-2 count, scoring Blamauer for the win.

"It was the highlight of my Badgers career to help the team pull out a win on the last day on home soil," said Sharp, a Teacher Education student from Whitby. "The entire game was full of intensity which made the walk-off win even more rewarding. I believe in this team so much and can't wait to go for gold in my final year next weekend."
 
Megan Morrow pitched two innings, allowed only one hit and zero runs. She allowed no walks and struck out a batter.
 
Holly Hanchiruk led the Badgers with two hits in three at bats. She contributed an RBI and a run.
 
In their second leg of the doubleheader, the Badgers lost 14-7 to the Mustangs.
 
Brock scored five runs in the third inning to take a 5-4 lead, however the Mustangs replied with five runs in the fourth.
 
Hanchiruk hit a double and tallied two RBI.
 
Grace Blamauer recorded two hits while Emily Hughes, Paige Sharp and Alexis Simpson each added an RBI.
