Badgers to play for medal at softball championships

The Brock softball team will compete for a medal.

The Badgers are heading to the Ontario Intercollegiate Women's Fastpitch Association (OIWFA) Championships in Brampton on Sunday, Oct. 24.

The Badgers qualified for the Championships despite falling 10-0 to the Western Mustangs in the Regional Final at Drumbo Park in Drumbo, Ont, on the afternoon of Saturday, Oct. 23.

The top two teams from each Regional (East and West) continue onto the OIWFA Championships.

Brock will play the University of Ottawa at the Brampton Fairgrounds in Brampton at 11:30 a.m. The winner advances to the gold-medal game at 4 p.m. If Brock loses, they will play at 2:30 p.m. for the bronze medal.

Earlier in the day, the Badgers were scheduled to play Western at 11 a.m. However, Waterloo pulled out of the tournament, so No. 2 Brock was tasked to play the No. 3 Laurier Golden Hawks.

The Badgers snatched the lead late in the game to claim a 9-6 win over the Golden Hawks.

Catcher Paige Sharp broke a 6-6 tie in the bottom of the sixth when she singled on a 3-1 count to score the game-winning run.

Pitcher Megan Morrow captured the win as she tossed four innings, struck out three batters, and allowed only two hits and two runs. Starter Emily Campbell struck out four through three innings.

Brock racked up 12 hits as Sharp, Kaitlyn Hickey, Tanis Drover and Holly Hanchiruk managed multiple hits. Sharp went three-for-four at the plate.

Hanchiruk and Emily Hughes each stole a base.
