Badgers win provincial medal at softball championships

The Brock Badgers softball team brought home a bronze medal from the Ontario Intercollegiate Women's Fastpitch Association (OIWFA) Championships in Brampton on Sunday, Oct. 24.

The Badgers blanked the Toronto Varsity Blues 2-0 at the Brampton Fairgrounds diamonds for their first medal since 2018.

"We're always proud of this group of ladies and how they carry themselves both on and off the field while representing Brock University," said head coach Mark Hall.

After qualifying with a win over Laurier on Saturday, Oct. 23, Brock reached the championships to earn a spot in the semifinal.

The Badgers faced adversity with a 10-3 loss to Ottawa in the semis before claiming bronze with a win over Toronto.

"Never a doubt that the girls would bounce back. Winning the bronze medal was very special for our seniors playing in their last game, as well as a sign of great things to come for our rookies," Hall said. "Our defence played like we knew they could, making some awesome plays throughout the game. Haleigh Wilson pitched a great game, keeping their batters off balance."

Wilson, a third-year pitcher studying Teacher Education, didn't allow a single run against the Blues as she threw a complete-game shutout.

"The pressure was on, but I didn't let it affect me. This game felt different but in the best way possible. I've never felt so confident not only in myself but in my entire team out there today," said Wilson, who was pitching in her hometown of Brampton. "I was completely in the zone and felt fired up, ready to win alongside my teammates."

The right-hander tossed seven innings and allowed five hits while striking out two batters.

"I love the Fairgrounds. It's such a beautiful field, and I love having my family watch my games," Wilson said. "It was comforting being back at those diamonds."

Brock outfielders Grace Blamauer and Emily Hughes, both named OIWFA all-stars before the weekend, recorded a pair of hits.

Blamauer drove in a run while Hughes tallied two doubles. Hughes and Ashley Westfall each scored a run. Emily Harron also added a hit.

This was the final game as a Badger for several seniors, including catcher Paige Sharp.

"The Brock softball team has truly shaped my student-athlete experience into something that I will cherish for many years to come. This team is a tight-knit group that picks each other up in and out of softball season," Sharp said. "The team is more than just playing on a field. We are a family that has built lifelong memories together. Once a Badger, always a Badger."
