Perfect start for Brock softball team

The Brock Badgers softball team is off to a perfect start in returning to Ontario Intercollegiate Women's Fastpitch Association action.

The Badgers played back-to-back doubleheaders on the weekend while outscoring their opponents 52-21.

Brock defeated Wilfried Laurier by scores of 7-0 and 13-11 at Lancaster Park in St. Catharines on Saturday, Sept. 18.

After shutting out the Golden Hawks in the first contest, the Badgers completed the sweep by outlasting Laurier in 11 innings in the second game of the day.

Outfielder Emily Hughes hit a game-winning triple as Brock outscored Laurier 3-1 in the 11th inning.

"Our second game against Laurier was the perfect highlight to everyone's passion for the game," Hughes said. "The 11 innings we fought through proved that nobody gives up. I found everyone played hard and selflessly, willing to do what it takes for the team. I'm beyond proud of my teammates."

Pitcher Megan Morrow struck out six batters while allowing four earned runs on six hits.

In their next series, Brock overwhelmed the McMaster Marauders 14-1 and 18-9 in Hamilton on Sunday, Sept. 19.

Hughes racked up a total of six runs, nine hits and batted in nine runs across four games. Last year would have been Hughes first season with the Badgers.

"It's amazing to finally be on the field with my new teammates," said Hughes, who previously played minor softball at various levels across Canada and the United States. "McMaster and Laurier each put up a great fight and kept us on our toes defensively."

Hughes, a first-year Teacher Education student from Brampton, hit three triples and attained 15 total bases.

Catcher Chanelle Church contributed four runs, six hits and five RBI, while shortstop Holly Hanchiruk scored a total of five runs, four hits and an RBI.

Up next, the Badgers (4-0) travel to Waterloo (0-2) on Saturday, Sept. 25. Brock hosts Guelph on Sunday, Sept. 26, for a doubleheader at Lancaster Park. Start times are 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
