Brock softball team improves to 5-1

The Brock Badgers softball team improved to 5-1 after splitting a pair of games against the Guelph Gryphons at Lancaster Park in St. Catharines on Sunday, Sept. 26.

Brock won the first game 9-2, while Guelph narrowly won the second contest by a score of 5-3. Brock sits second in the Ontario Intercollegiate Women's Fastpitch Association's West Division behind the undefeated Western Mustangs.

Brock leads the division with 62 total runs scored.

This weekend, the Badgers played only two games since their doubleheader at Waterloo on Saturday, Sept. 25, was postponed due to the weather.

Outfielder Emily Hughes led the Badgers at the plate by going five-for-seven with a run and four RBI. In addition, she collected five hits and three stolen bases.

In the first game, Hughes drove in runs on a single in the first, a double in the second, and a single in the fourth. The Badgers also scored on a triple by Holly Hanchiruk in the first inning.

Hughes, Gabby Panth and Hanchiruk each registered multiple hits for Brock.

Emily Campbell captured the win for Brock after lasting for five innings, allowing one hit and two runs while striking out three.

In the second game, Hughes notched two hits in four at-bats while the Badgers tore up the base paths. Hughes led the way with three stolen bases. Emily Harron, Emily Campbell, Josie Butler-Watson and Alexis Simpson each recorded a hit.

Next, the Badgers travel to Windsor to face the Lancers for back-to-back games on Sunday, Oct. 3 at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
