WATERLOO - With two wins on the opening day of the OUS provincial championship in Waterloo, the Brock Badgers women's softball team secured a spot in the final four on Sunday.
Brock opened the double-elimination style championship bracket with a 7-6 extra-inning victory over the York Lions.
The win propelled the Badgers into a quarter-final showdown with Queen's later in the afternoon. Falling behind early to the Gaels, Brock was able to put together a three run fifth inning, however it wouldn't be enough as they fell by a final of 9-3. The loss knocked the Badgers into the consolation bracket where they would need to remain undefeated in order to avoid being eliminated from the championship.
Matching up with the Ottawa Gee-Gees in the consolation quarter-final, Brock shutout their opponent by a score of 7-0 to push themselves into the consolation semifinal on Sunday morning.
Prior to the championship action beginning, the OUS also announced their annual awards on Friday night with the Badgers picking up two OUS all-star nods as both
Holly Hanchiruk and
Emily Campbell being recognized for their strong season performances.
The Badgers will open Sunday at 9 a.m. versus the Toronto Varsity Blues. A win would push them into medal contention, while a loss will see their season come to a close.
