Badgers come home with OUS bronze medal

WATERLOO - The Brock Badgers women's softball team picked up the Ontario University Softball Championship bronze medal on Sunday afternoon in Waterloo.

After qualifying for the provincial championship final four with two wins on the first day of competition Saturday, Brock was faced with an uphill task on Sunday requiring a consolation semifinal victory early in the morning to reach the podium places.

The Badgers met the Toronto Varsity Blues in the first game of the championship Sunday, earning a hard fought 5-2 victory to advance to the medal games.

Next in the bronze medal match, which would see the winner progress to the gold medal game, Brock challenged Queen's for the second time in as many days. The Badgers fell behind early as the hot bats of the Gaels propelled them into an early lead. However, Brock were never down and out as they continued to close the gap, but would run out of innings falling by a final score of 8-6 to finish with the provincial bronze.

Queen's would go on to upset the No. 1 ranked Western Mustangs in the championship final, marking the first new champion since 2010, ending the streak of the Mustangs.

The Badgers once again proved themselves to be a contender and with continued dedication and improvements in the offseason will look to achieve a podium result in 2023.
