Badgers set for OUA championships

The Brock Badgers men's tennis team have their eyes on at the OUA championships happening this weekend (Oct. 5 – Oct. 7) at Mayfair Toronto East.

Along with Brock, there are six other teams competing (McMaster Marauders, Ottawa Gee-Gees, Toronto Varsity Blues, Waterloo Warriors, Western Mustangs, York Lions). The No. 1 and No. 2 seeds are the defending champion Western Mustangs and the host Toronto Varsity Blues.

The Badgers come in at the No. 6 spot and will take on the No. 3 York Lions at 9:30 a.m.

"Being able to compete against York again is something we are looking forward to," said head coach Todd Green

For the Badgers, Evan Goad is one to watch. The first-year sport management student has won four matches this season from the No. 4 spot and has had a great year in doubles competition as well. With two different partners, the Port Perry product has wins over McMaster and Western (with Alex Christiano) as well as Ottawa and Toronto (with Jaden Chamberlain).

Head coach Todd Green has switched up some of the pairings heading into the postseason and the team of Goad and Cristiano are clicking at the right time. Along with Goad and Cristiano, the Badgers will send out the pairings of Jaden Chamberlain and Evan From as well as Nestor Voroynch and Alec Fraser

Voroynch had one of the highlights for the Badgers this season. The computer science major helped Brock earn a 4-3 win over McMaster on Sept. 24 with a 10-8 third set tiebreaker win in his singles match.

The men's team has had success during the year, winning matches over Ottawa and McMaster, with members of the team winning individual contests over the top two seeds in this tournament in Western and Toronto.

After the quarter-final matches take place on Friday (Oct. 6), the four remaining teams will compete in semifinal matches happening on Saturday (Oct. 6). The championships wrap up with the gold medal and bronze medal matches on Sunday (Oct. 7).
