Simpson, Badgers shine bright in Ontario University Softball action

Shortstop Alexis Simpson enjoyed a standout performance across four games this past weekend.
 
Simpson, a second-year Kinesiology student from Barrie, belted a home run, six hits, a pair of singles, a double, a triple and nine RBI in 11 plate appearances versus the Waterloo Warriors and McMaster Marauders.
 
She posted a .947 fielding percentage and .545 batting average.
 
Simpsons and the Badgers posted a record of 3-1 on the weekend between a doubleheader in Waterloo and another at home against McMaster.
 
The Badgers are third in the Ontario University Softball (OUS) West Division with a record of 5-3 trailing Windsor (8-2) and first-place Western (10-0).
 
GAME 1: Brock 5, McMaster 2
 
The Badgers were victorious against McMaster Marauders 5-2 on Sunday, Sept. 17 at Lancaster Park.
 
The Marauders opened the scoring in the third inning with two runs.
 
Brock took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning after Raquel Gomes doubled, and Emma Andres singled, each scoring a run.
 
Pitcher Reagan Lalande earned the win for the Badgers on the mound. She gave up seven hits and two runs over seven innings, striking out two and walking none.
 
Andres and Tanis Drover each collected two hits for the Badgers. Faith Westman went 1-for-3 at the plate as the center fielder led the team with two runs batted in. Brock turned two double plays in the game.
 
Game 2: Brock 12, McMaster 4
 
In the second contest, the Badgers got on the board in the top of the first inning after Bella Miller singled, scoring one run, and Simpson doubled, scoring two runs.
 
The Badgers scored five runs on four hits in the top of the second inning. McMaster induced Westman to hit into a fielder's choice, but one run scored, Simpson hit a sacrifice fly, scoring a run, an error scored one run, an error scored one run, and Brielle Greenslade doubled, scoring a run.
 
Brock extended its early lead with two runs in the top of the third thanks to RBI singles by Simpson and Drover.
 
Pitcher Megan Morrow earned the win for Brock. The starting pitcher allowed four hits and four runs (zero earned) over five innings, striking out three and walking one.
 
Brock piled up 13 hits in the game.
 
Andres, Drover, Miller, Simpson, and Greenslade each collected two hits for Brock Badgers.
 
Simpson provided pop in the middle of the lineup, and led the Badgers with four runs batted in.
 
The shortstop went 2-for-3 on the day.
 
Up next, the Badgers host six games in three days at Lancaster Park:
  • Friday, Sept. 22 vs the Guelph Gryphons (7 p.m. and 9 p.m.)
  • Saturday, Sept. 23 vs Laurier Golden Hawks (7 p.m. and 9 p.m.)
  • Sunday, Sept. 24 vs Waterloo Warriors (11 a.m. and 1 p.m.)
