The Brock Badgers softball team started their busy weekend slate with a doubleheader sweep (9-5, 5-4) over the visiting Guelph Gryphons on Friday (Sept. 22) night.
Game 1: Brock 9 Guelph 5
The Badgers took down the Gryphons in the first contest off a strong performance from first year catcher/utility Emma Young.
Young got the scoring started, getting a run batted in on a groundout in the bottom of the first.
Brielle Greenslade added a second run for the Badgers on a fielder's choice the inning after.
Guelph took a 4-2 lead in the top of the fourth, after a Sarah Scott walk scored one run and a Kaitlyn Benko sacrifice bunt brought home two.
The Bagers fought back in the bottom half of the inning, scoring three runs from hits from Greenslade, Young and Bella Miller to retake the lead at 5-4.
The lead was extended for the Badgers in a four-run bottom fifth. One run for the Gryphons in the top of the sixth would be the final run of the contest as the Badgers took it 9-5.
Megan Morrow earned the win after pitching 4.2 innings with two strikeouts, while surrendering only three hits and two earned runs. Reagan Lalande delivered 2.1 innings in relief with one strikeout and one earned run.
Young went 3-4 at the plate with two runs batted in, while Andres and Tanis Drover also had multiple hits. Greenslade tied Young with a team-high two runs batted in.
Game 2: Brock 5 Guelph 4
Greenslade led the way for the Badgers scoring two runs off a double in the first inning to get the scoring started. The Mississauga, Ont., product contributed to Brock's three-run third inning with a triple. Tanis Drover added a RBI single in the frame as the Badgers held a 5-0 lead.
The Gryphons got one back in the third and used three singles to score three runs in the bottom fourth to reduce the advantage to 5-4.
