The Brock Badgers were bested by the Guelph Gryphons by scores of 4-0 and 10-7 on Friday, Sept. 20 at Lancaster Park.
With the two losses, the Badgers women's softball team falls to 2-8 on the season.
Game 1: Brock 0 - Guelph 4
The Guelph Gryphons put up eight hits and delivered solid pitching to shut out the Badgers.
Brooke Highly got the start for the Gryphons in the circle and threw a complete game no-hitter, giving up four hits while striking out 10 batters and only walking two.
On the other side, the Badgers had pitcher Raegan Lalande also go the distance, giving up four runs (three earned) on eight hits in six innings of work. Lalande added two strikeouts and did not walk a single hitter.
The fourth-year Kinesiology major also shined at the plate, delivering a team-high two hits in three plate appearances.
After scoring a run in the bottom of the second and fourth innings, the Gryphons added two insurance runs in the sixth to give them a comfortable cushion and the win.
Fielding issues affected the Badgers, surrendering two errors compared to none from the Gryphons.
Tanis Drover and Emma Andres also earned hits for the Badgers in Game 1.
Game 2: Brock 7 - Guelph 10
Brielle Greenslade and Emma Young powered the Badgers, each recording three hits and two runs batted in (RBI) in the second contest.
Greenslade and Young both chipped in with doubles alongside singles by Alexis Simpson and Emma Poulton as the Badgers tied the contest with a six-run bottom of the sixth. Brock saw all nine batters appear at the plate with Isabella Miller starting and ending the inning from the batter's box.
After a scoreless seventh inning, extra innings were required. In the top of the additional frame, the Gryphons piled on four runs off three singles and a walk.
The comeback attempt from the Badgers was held at bay as Young would be the only Badger to drive a run in during the eighth inning, driving in Tanis Drover on a single to reduce the Gryphons' lead to 10-7.
Andres and Miller were the other contributors at the dish for the Badgers, notching one hit each.
Poulton pitched six innings, giving up eight hits and six runs (three earned) and walking two batters. Lalande came in relief for the final two innings and was credited with three earned runs and the loss.
Both teams had trouble in the field as the Badgers surrendered four errors and the Gryphons gave up three of their own.
Up next, the Badgers look to get back to their winning ways on Saturday, Sept. 21 as they travel to Waterloo for 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. contests against the Laurier Golden Hawks. This marks the second doubleheader of a scheduled three over the weekend for the women's softball team.
