Dr. Lorne J. Adams spent more than 40 years at Brock University, arriving in 1974 as a faculty member in the Department of Physical Education, now known as the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences, where he went on to teach, mentor and lead thousands of students.
His coaching tenure with the men’s hockey team ran from 1976 to 1980 and was highlighted by OUAA Central Coach of the Year recognition during the 1976-77 season, when the team reached the playoffs for the first time in program history.
Adams earned numerous distinguished teaching honours throughout his career, including the prestigious 3M Canada Teaching Fellowship Award in 2004. He also received the Alumni Association Teaching Award (1993), the Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching (1993) and the Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations Award for Outstanding Contribution to University Teaching (1994).
Named Athletic Director of Brock Sports in 2001, Adams oversaw an era of remarkable success, with the Badgers capturing 50 championships, including 31 provincial and 19 national titles. During this time, the men’s soccer team earned its first national championship in 2002, men’s basketball claimed a second national title in 2007-08 and men’s wrestling secured eight consecutive OUA and CIS team titles. In 2010, his final year as Athletic Director, Adams was recognized with the J.P. Loosemore Award from the OUA, given to an individual who exemplifies the highest standards of ethics, integrity and honesty in university sport.
