Joel Finlay attended Brock University and played for the men’s hockey team from 1970-71.
His accomplishments extend beyond the rink as he had many achievements in the sport of rowing, receiving multiple opportunities to represent Canada.
Finlay finished fourth in the men’s four event at the 1967 Pan American Games in Winnipeg and ninth in the men’s eight at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City.
In 1969, he competed at the Canada Summer Games and captured gold medals in the men’s eight and men’s four events. Finlay also placed eighth with the men’s eight crew at the 1975 World Rowing Championships.
He won seven Canadian National Rowing Championships and three United States National Rowing Championships.
In 2010, Finlay received the incredible honour of being named an Olympic Torch Bearer for the Vancouver Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Finlay has served on the boards of Rowing Canada, Olympians Canada, the Canadian Public Health Association, the Canadian Cancer Society (BC Chapter), the Alumni Council at the Harvard University School of Public Health and the Ridley Graduate Boat Club.
