Herb de Bray joined Brock University in 1980 and was the inaugural Brock swimming coach, who played a significant
role in growing Brock's swimming and aquatics program and facilities.

Under de Bray’s leadership, Brock University opened a $3.1-million swimming complex in September 1981 that has provided opportunities for Brock students and the broader Niagara community to participate in aquatic activities.

de Bray received the prestigious Petro-Canada Award for Coaching Excellence from the Coaching Association of Canada, a testament to his guidance of athletes to the World Record level. He was also the Vice-President of the Canadian Amateur Swimming Association, where he spearheaded initiatives to grow the sport and attract more people to swimming.

He served as the Director of Sport for the Ontario Games for the Physically Disabled, highlighting his commitment to inclusivity and community in sport. In 2015, de Bray was recognized for his contributions to the swimming community by being inducted into the Swim Ontario Hall of Fame as a builder.
